Posted By s_jesu Hi gentle men, As you are aware of different types of Hazard and while doing my nebosh, I studied about psycolgical hazard which is a long term Hazard. -fear of unemployment, lack of motivation and harassment. While working as an EPC contractor executing multi million $ projects for International OIL & Gas Giants, we often meet this hazard generated from PMC or Client HSE personels. The HSE personels of PMC or CLient use to harrase the EPC or Subcontractor HSE personnels. They use to thriten us saying " I will kick you out of this project", They never think we work for your company and you are supposed to help us in creating a safe environment. Is there any way to come out of this hazard..which really hurts..and reduces our capabilities..losses our confidence.. Cheers S Jesu

Posted By Godwin D'Souza Dear Jesu The company which you work with should comply with contract requirements. It is your job to advise your management to comply with, and hence you are not in pressure, you are not the executive power, but project manager is, and if he is not under pressure, why should you, secondly to safe guard your self you should maintain a log signed by your superior to cover your back, thereby you are not in a psychological pressure.

Posted By FAH Jesu - this is an incredibly important issue in any workplace & it's very perceptive of you to raise it.. Basically, what you describe is a regretably common situation that is only ever created or allowed to flourish by the incompetent manager/employer - there are just too many of them! It's also a major underlying cause of a very large number of accidents & ill-health - many of which fail to have the true underlying causes recognised. There are two different worlds to be considered here, the "theoretical ideal" & the "real". It's very easy to say to someone "Stand up & change things"; but in any industry where the pool of available labour is substantially larger than the possible number of jobs it is very easy for the workforce to be convinced that there's always another person to fill that job; so they understandably say & do nothing to draw attention to themselves. If the person just keeps their head down, stays quiet & doesn't do anything it's almost inevitable that they, or someone else will be injured eventually. If they stand up and identify the problem, they generally feel that they won't be working there any more. Everyone in that position will make a very personal value judgement based upon their circumstances. There is no definitive or effective way in which the victims of such a system can be helped without active intervention of those who are supposed to police the employers. Frank Hallett

Posted By Jay Joshi My view is that it is do with the clients "organisation culture", irrespective whether it is to do with HSE, Quality etc. A competent client organisation would have robust systems in place on what its expectations are up front prior to awarding contracts so that there is clarity in terms of expectations for both parties and also how to deal with real time deviations without resorting to threats. When I refer to "robust systems in place, it also means that the expectations are communicated to all concerned and it is not a file of terms and conditions stored at a remote location.
