The Jeremy Vine show today on Radio 2 will be discussing the allegation that health and safety is killing science teaching in schools and apparently during the show they will be setting off a rocket in a BBC toilet. Might be an interesting show to listen to. It was listed as the 4th item they'll be discussing in the 2 hour show, so I'd guess it'll probably be on at around 1.30pm.

BBC Radio London apparently had a similar story on at 9am.
Vanessa Feltz was on Breakfast to promote her show to discuss how H&S is ruining Chemisty Lessons, with children having to watch experiments on the internet instead of doing them themselves.

Turned out to be a bit of a non-story really, involving a "rocket" made of fizzy pop and steradent tablets!

Any media coverage of science in schools without input from CLEAPPS is likely to be one-sided and ill-informed.
The reason is probably the lack of funding for proper facilities. An adequate number of fume-cupboards for the more hazardous science activities.
Most distillation involve the use of hydrocarbons that are flammable substances and a fume cupboard is normally required for doing this safely.
