Posted By Mostafa Hi everyone, Basically im after some help, I am doing my dissertation subject on: "To review and compare the availability and quality of information regarding the control of contractors and to identify best practice from the literature review" The literary review would be a comparison between the advice available and is it suitable. I have an idea of things which i would like to look at but just wondering how every one else would approach this ? For example what literature would you look at ? Which you think is the best available ? Any advice and tips you can offer etc. I would be very grateful for any help i receive on this as it is worth a big percent of my mark and need to make sure it good to get a 2.1!. Thanks in advance and hope to hear from you soon.

Posted By Raymond Rapp Another quickie CDM regs and ACOP, assuming of course you are UK based, if not, still good reading for your lit review. Might also consider citing some case law which you may be able to draw some comparisons and in any case, they will make an interesting embellishment. Suggest Regina v Associated Octel Ltd [1996] as a start. Ray

Posted By Lwood Look at industry best practice guides, most industry sectors now have trade bodies and groups that give some reassurance as to quality and training, such as: - IEE - Compressed gasses - PASMA To name but a few. Don't forget that some sectors have charted status as well such as Civil Engineering, IOSH etc. Whilst I don't think they do much, consider CHAS and Safe Contractor, they are both supposed to help you select and control contractors Don't just focus on the HSE, other bodies set standards as well. Posted By Ron Hunter Of course there's a lot more to the control of contractors than just health and safety considerations Mostafa. Your brief as you quote it is rather broad!

Posted By Mostafa Hi, Thanks for the responses, I'm just trying to get ideas off every one at the moment and get as many sources of information i can. I will then decided how to compose my dissertation. Still in very early stages yet! The reason i posted here is because there is such a wealth of knowledge amongst the health and safety minds here. What areas outside of health and safety would you look at ? Do you think these areas would be good to include as it shows I'm thinking out side the box. what areas do you think would be best to look at ? Sorry for all the questions but i think it will really help me asking people on here their views. Thanks :)

Posted By Ron Hunter Environmental Impact and Waste Disposal would be reasonable items of enquiry - depends on the line of work though.

Posted By David Brede You may want to look at systems such as CHAS that pre assess construction contractors before organisations (mainly local authorities) take on a new contractor. CDM 2007 requires clients to choose contractors and designers that are competent and the hint in the question is that there should be monitoring of some sort to verify that this is true. Most firms will assess the performance of contractors after a job has been completed and this will vary from the informal of a small firm, to a detailed questionnaire of a larger one.

Posted By Mostafa Thanks David, I could write up a section on how and if they are monitored effectively and what literature there is to guide them on effective way to monitor ?

Posted By David Brede I would think there are many readers of this thread who could provide you with examples of practice in various firms.

Posted By Mostafa I have already made a start on my dissertation, This is called the research stage, getting information together from as many sources as possible and it will also give me a wider view of how organisations control contractors.
