Depends what you are looking for!

To gain access a lot of sites, Nuclear, power gen, manufacturing etc - some companies require you hold the Safety Passport as it was designed to ensure a minimum level of understanding of safety matters.

To enter a construction site you may need to hold the CSCS card.

But if you are looking at a basic in house training package for your own people, the IOSH Working Safely would be a good alternative to the Safety Passport

Sorry I should have fully expanded on my question. I need to ensure that operatives have had health & safety awareness preferably CCNSG health & safety passport so hence the enquiry over what is out there. Does the BSC Level 1 Cert in Health and Safety meet the mark?

Hi Matt - I do not think BSC do a level 1 - and level 2 is very basic.

If you need the passport to get people on site, then the passport training may suffice.

If it is in house training then go for the IOSH working safely course. It is 1 day against 2 days for passport. More interaction than passport and totally more professional.
You can get 20 people on one sitting of IOSH against 16 on the passport.

BSC do a Level 1 course. 7 hours instruction and an exam, introductory level.

They have a 'free 100' places for member companies.

Hi Matt.

If your operatives are visiting Engineering Construction sites e.g. in petrochem and heavy engineering, most clients will require CCNSG as there are no affiliated schemes.

If they work in other sectors, e.g. Food and Drink then they may need documentation from the Safety Passport Alliance with general training + sector specific training.

There have been moves to try and get wider recognition of the compatibility of various different card schemes, but to date not that much progress over a very long time.

This does my head in!!! H&S consultants / trainers have got their snouts in the trough over this

CCNSG / SPA / CSCS / SSSTS / IOSH / BSC and a number of others are ALL THE SAME do not let these idiots tell you anything different, but will insist that they are different! A load of tosh!

How many ways can you talk about the HASAW or S2 offences and employers / employees duties.

Some of our guys have all the above as "safety" people will say I need you to have CCNSG!!!

" but we have all the others"

Don't care you need this and here is an invoice as well if you want the work!!!

And on a similar subject why has a well known organisation not joined SSIP, they will lose MONEY!!! that's why! never mind that it will make contracting easier and remove some red tape, the UKCG are looking at this anyway!!!

Totally agree Dave - but if you want to work - and the employer demands CCNSG or CSCS - what do you do - starve??

And as I understand - the questioner was looking for basic training for his ops - not being forced to by a contractor or consultant,

Agreed mate.

there are lots of equivalents it just depends on the client / sector /industry and how approachable the are are. so ask them.

some even have their own 'in house' which is the same and also charge you to attend as well!!

You cant GET on a main contractors group site in construction without a CSCS card and you cant WORK on a main contractors group site without a CSCS grade card, or an affiliate.
Also, the main contractors group will no longer accept the IOSH managing safety certification, they want the CITB SMSTS certification instead.
Jobs for the boys??
Money for old rope??
Just another training course??
YOU DECIDE!!!!!!

Take your point mate but in the last 6 years only been asked for CSCS twice!

UKCG will be asking for SSSTS from January for ALL supervisors!

It seems generally that the organisations requesting these passport cards want to see an indication of current H&S awareness. I was recently informed that managing safety wasn't sufficient unless it had been taken within the last year so had to do the CCNSG.
