Posted By T Birchall Of interest, what makes you think he was being like that? Not being cynical, I'm just interested as I refused to continue to work for a client who was trying to register with CHAS. The fact that there's no way they would have been ready for an audit / inspection (as they did not want to pay us to prepare for such)made me step back.

Posted By BJA Partnership of 2 heating and ventilating engineers/plumbers. They dont use sub contractors or employees and do have up to date very comprehensive HS/Env policies. Both partners took and passed SMSTS 5 day course last year plus Asbestos Awareness certs but dont prepare written risk assessments as they do this process on site verbally. No reportable accidents in last 5 years or HSE intervention and fully insured with good references for safe site work.

Posted By T Birchall Hi, based upon the size of your business you have adequate qualifications. Not many people would bother, nor would they have the time to attend week long courses (SMSTS). Maybe he believes that you don't have access to one or more competent persons. I don't know too much about the CHAS criteria, but in his defence maybe he has minimum criteria to go from. Can't he tell you outright?

Posted By briansmithesq I have a client who produced everything CHAS asked for, but were knocked back on really pedantic grounds, but were told they could re-submit for a further £80.

Posted By Ron Hunter The Assessing Criteria are all freely available via the CHAS website downloads. For a small business (if I remember correctly) you'll want the Appendix 3A criteria.

Posted By John Murphy BJA As Ron Hunter points out there is a facility to make a complaint in the contact us section It reads "If you wish to contact us for an assessor or you have a compliment, complaint or comment, fill in the form and click 'submit'. Please note you can only appeal the assessment outcome if you have failed it. The CHAS scheme take complaints seriously but prefer they are raise in the first instance directly with CHAS. Hope this helps Regards John

Posted By John Murphy Why would a heating and plumbing company with just two employees have both of them attend a Site Managers Safety Training Scheme taking up 5 days of their lives at a cost of many hundreds of pounds and of course incur a loss of 10 person days productivity. Never mind the fact they will probably never act as the Principal contractor for the foreseeable future? Who advised that I wonder Unbelievable! John

Posted By BJA John Two points 1. HV engineers do occasionally act as PCs. 2. I am not sure that CHAS should be critical of Construction personnel that wish to take one of the most highly regarded Construction Health and Safety courses available. Thats unbelievable. BJA

Posted By GeoffB4 John's question is quite valid though. Why would they 'both' go, surely in a small 2 person company not using contractors or others it is a little over the top?

Posted By BJA http://www.ssip.co.uk You are right CHAS are branching out not only to accredit Construction Companies, Architects, CDMCs but now any business sector.

Posted By John Murphy BJA My comment about the appropriateness of SMTS for a two person company is a personal one and not those of CHAS or any other organisation. I was careful in making the point that they "probably" would never act as PC in the foreseeable future. At no point do I (or CHAS) criticise SMSTS, CITB or any other organisation. John

Posted By James Dobson Dave Just to clarify your point regarding UKCG making CHAS registration compulsory from January. This is not the case. UKCG has no plans introduce a mandatory prequlification system. We currently support schemes to ensure they meet the requirements of our membership. James

Posted By Ron Hunter BJA, CHAS were never restricted in application to any contractor group (construction or otherwise). In that respect, it's incorrect to suggest they are now "branching out"?
