Dear all
I've read the forum so far, much of which was very helpful, especially the post on volantary work.
My husbands been in recruitment for years and I'm a Chartered Surveyor/ H&S person, and he has become more and more interested/ bored with my rants on stupidity on construction sites, and now wants to move into a H&S role.
He has self funded the NEBOSH general and fire certificates, in the hope that this may open a number of doors, but the lack of a "trade" so to speak seems to be a hinderance.
As such utilising his existing office biase, we are now looking at a Facilities Management role, which combines H&S in he job spec as an entry level option. Its a step back in salary but I'm hoping it will be a way in to the industry, as qualications seem to mean nowt, without some practical experience.
Thanks from Central London

Sorry, just to help clarify your post, is your husband looking for fulltime work / voluntary work or both?
Best Regards

He's looking for a full time role in H&S but is finding it hard to get an interview due to lack of practical experience, even though he has spent time and money undertaking qualifications.
Its been six months of applications so we have had to look at other options, such as FM where he has some existing skills and can try and get some H&S experience.
If this doesnt work he is looking at trying some unpaid voluntry work to try and attain some practical experience to get his foot on the ladder.
He's taken a few day off over the last year and has shadowed me, but its difficult to do it this way, I'm his wife I cant really give him a reference.

It might be advisable for your husband to join LINKEDIN, a free website which enables people to join different groups. There are groups which specialise in Facilities Management who may be able to give him focused advice
