Surfing the rubbish that is Freeview last night when I caught the end of a news programme. They were discussing lead at work and specifically criticising the HSE for failing to carry out health surveillance on whole groups of workers that come into contact with lead (they particuarly noted scrapyard workers are ommitted from routine blood tests).

The item also stated that the HSE has been told by occupational health specialists that the safe limit for lead needs to be lowered as there is significant evidence that lower levels are causing serious health problems for a substantial body of workers. Lower levels have been set in other EU countries.

What I found quite interesting was the HSE response, which was that the legislation and guidance we have in the UK falls within the EU Directive.

That made me laugh considering the fact that the HSE is well known to goldplate our legislation and guidance to take it beyond what the EU Directives require. Obviously not in this case!!

Just wondered if anyone else saw it and had any opinons. I missed the beginning of the report so don't know what was said that I missed.

That's funny, Claire. I thought you were referring to shipyard workers and couldn't work out why hips were so offensive!

Many forums have automated cenosoring of words which the admin can enter. There is a wildcard function which seems to have been applied here.

So a word containing a swear word will be caught out too.

There are hundreds of words which will be affected by this method.

The item couldn't have anything to do with the current scrapping between politicians and scientific advisers, could it? Why suddenly now does it become headline news?

And it is nice to see that artificial intelligence is still someway in the future :)

Now I'm even more confused. Why are politicians and scientists shopping?

Sorry, it's Friday.

Must admit I had assumed it was shipyard rather than skrapyard. This automatic deletion of words could make the site quite annoying if they aren't careful.

What started as a serious post on lead at work at the HSE (once again) coming in for criticism has unexpectedly turned into something else!!

Didn't know that it woiuld pick out a potentially offensive word from within the spelling of another word. That could be interesting!!! Wonder how many I can think of!!

LOL!

Clairel, we'll look into it for you. In the meantime you could use the work "junk".

I agree Clairel the responses to the lead question are a bit sparse.

As it was Freeview there's a fair chance it will be repeated a few times!

I wonder if this forum allows weigh[expletive deleted]chers?

No I don't think it will be repeated it was a news programme. It may have been More4 and therefore Channel 4 news.

Looks like no one else may have seen it.

Shame it was an interesting subject.

....though so is swear words within the spelling of other words!!! Well it is Friday!

Here is a reasonably outlined article on the subject if you wish to delve further into the detail.

There's a town in North Lincolnshire that's going to be *very* annoyed by wildcard filtering.

The lead story was on Channel 4 news - you can get it via their website:

If the system is capable of spotting the spelling of certain words, why can't we have a 'spool chucker'?

At least its not throwing in its own alternatives. Another forum I use repalced 'C-O-C-K-I-N-G' with 'coconutting' ....On a forum about shooting!

Sorry Claire, didn't see the article. But the other issue arising!!! It is Friday after all.
Hm... I wonder what words are included in the list? Why should Brigg have anything to be upset about?

This needs to to be fixed - so a stitch (1) in time may or not appear with rude bits deleted?

And a little bit of coarse (2) humour will get even funnier

And the poor old bumbling (3) safety officer will be censored at last?

Any discussion on the cockle (4) Gangmasters might be hard to follow

And anybody trying to discuss tobacco or carpets might have problems...

Lets see. This could be fun!
