Dear IOSH users, please advise.

I hold a BSc in Physics, MSc in Project Managment, Nebosh diploma and working in H&S and needed to further add value to my knowledge by applying for a MSc(Eng) in Process Safety and Loss Prevention. My question is, after this MSc will i be able to gain employment in the Oil & Gas or related industry bearing in mind my experience so far is within construction, railway and utilities.

Hi,
It would certainly help with efforts to seek employment in a Technical Safety capacity.
The two disciplines of Technical Safety and Occupational Health, Safety, (Security), Environment (and Quality) usually are discrete and separate in Oil and Gas. Technical Safety usually lies within the 'engineering' element of the organisation with Occupational HSSEQ under the 'production' or 'project' element. Technical Safety support is often provided by specialist consultancies such as Genesis, etc.
Possibly slightly less so with Technical Safety Safety than Occupational HSSEQ, the issue is more likely to be the amount of experience you have in the industry.

Regards,
Ross

Thanks Ross,

my experience is not within the oil & gas or chemical but have over six years in construction, utility and rail. I am looking to get into technical safety as a matter of interest and with my experience in safety, health, environmental & quality plus the MSc from Sheffield that should put me in a good chance right?

Regards,

SA

I would say so, although I suspect that the route of entry to Oil and Gas would be easier (post-MSC(Eng)) by joining one of the larger multi-industry Technical Safety players rather than one of the construction companies/operators directly.

Ross

One final link - the Technical Safety people tend to be members of the Safety and Reliability Society - http://www.sars.org.uk/
