I am currently looking at instigating a yearly audit in order to focus attention on health and safety provide the impotus to drive improvements in health and safety within my company. We have a similar audit from the BRC (British retail consortium) which really focuses us on maintaining quality, service and tracability standards.
I am looking at the Rospa and BSC audits as they seem very comprehensive and highly regarded, they both also grade in a 5 stage approch, giving the company an aspirational target to improve year on year.
At the moment we have a SMS which is very loosly based around HSG 65, having said that there are huge parts missing. So I doubt that we would get a graiding at all at the moment. The Idea is to pre audit and improve on what we do now, with a view to going for the big audit in 6 to 12 months time.
What are your experiences of the two audits? How helpfull have you found them? How tough are they? Have you used them to drive improvement and how sussessfull have they been?

I have used QSA personally and as a manager for 8 years now. It does drive improvement (or it can if the will is there) and it does set a very high standard. Training for the QSA is roughly Level 3 I would say, having done some L3 certificates in my time, and involves a close reading of HSG65 in addition to studying the theory of audit.
The application of QSA takes about 80 hours of auditing time (for a full internal audit), though I believe it is longer if you are paying RoSPA to come in and do it. It really is a gold standard product.
Can't comment on the BSC audit as I have never used or experienced it, though like you I have heard that it is intensive and exhaustive,
John

If you think you are a long way off meeting the QSA requirements RoSPA can do a baseline audit without all the cost of a full QSA. I had it done a while ago and it was well worth it.
