I have been told that it is a Lift Supervisors responsibility to ensure that a crane is rigged/de-rigged in the correct manner. I’m not familiar with the do’s and don’ts of crane operations. However, I find it hard to believe that a lift supervisor, with limited knowledge of crane operations, certainly not as much as the crane operator, can be ultimately responsible for rigging and de-rigging. Can anyone tell me if this is the case and where is this written down that these responsibilities are the supervisors.

I would suggest you are right it is not covered in BS7121 Part 1 as one of the crane supervisor(Same as lift supervisor)duties. It does not figure in Regulation 8 of LOLER.
This may stem from the fact that a lot of Lift Supervisors are Crane Drivers.
I would suggest he must have some idea but not must know fully(My opinion).
I will keep looking but I would tend to agree with you as you would expect the crane driver to be competent as required by LOLER and BS7121 bestpractice guide.

Afternoon all,
Are you looking at BS7121 2006?
Good interpretation of 2006 can be obtained from Testcert UK, but as you can imagine they answer specific quires given control of BSI publications etc. Actually they give lots of assistance on all types of stuff.

It would be the Crane Supervisor's responsibility to make sure that the crane was rigged up in accordance with the lift plan produced by the appointed person (AP), so he/she should have some knowledge of crane operations.
For example, if the AP has specified fully outriggers then they should understand why this has been specified, & be able to identify if the crane operator has set the crane on half outriggers (just because it was easier)
I've also known it where a crane operator has tried to pursuade a crane supervisor that he didn't need a specific hook size because he didn't want the hassle of changing it.
Regards
