I appreciate that you need to consult the electricity distribution companies, but does anyone have a simple formula that would give a safe working distance for in areas where there are overhead power lines present of varying voltages?

I'm not sure what context you are referring to but agriculture and construction both have comprehensive guidance docs on OHPL's.

Don't know if you found the info you were looking for in GS6 - but I have come across the following figures which have been used by one (UK) distribution company:

"Ground level barriers are required at the following minimum horizontal distances from the line:-

a) 6 metres – up to and including 33kV.
b) 9 metres – greater then 33kV up to and including 132kV.
c) 14 metres greater than 132kV."


Note particularly the >132kV clearance is greater than that identified in HSE guidance GS6....

And noting these are horizontal clearances- there are other considerations for vertical clearances...
