I have recently joined a company who have a multitude of different PTW's in use. EG General PTW; Work @ Heights PTW; Excavation PTW; Use of a Large Crane PTW; Roof Work PTW: Electrical Work PTW etc etc. I accept the need for a PTW to control tasks that have a significant hazard and have grown use to the additional ones for Hot Work & Confined Space Work but, if we are to keep things simple, I cannot understand why this organisation should want to use so many.

I would be interested to hear the veiws of other Practitioners - have I got it so wrong?

Hello Young29421,

I have a PTW process and procedure which uses a single PTW for all situations albeit it may need some supplementary paperwork for some. I developed it several years ago to be consistent with recognised best practice guidance at the time but for the life of me I cannot find the source document now. I'd be happy to send you a copy if you are interested and if you let me have your contact details.

Thanks and best regards,

A PTW is necessary in high risk activities such confined spaces etc. We do not use a permit for WAH, which is not normally a high risk activity if properly managed through a SSoW. Generally I think there is too many prescriptive measures that in themselves create extra hazards. Personally, I think the way forward is empowerment through a highly trained workforce, which would negate the need for endless reams of paper work and confusion.

A PTW does not need to be specificially for the traditional activities that it used to be for e.g. hot works, electrical, high pressure, asbestos and very similar risk areas

A company can dictate any way of working in their business that they want to and with what info you have given out it appears that the co you are dealing with have got things tight so I would leave it that way; only changing if you can see a better way of working and as WAH is high risk why not have a PTW in place for such work

Paperwork can be an issue but that can easily be managed down to the minimum that is really needed for any specific operation noting that QA, invoicing etc probably has more paperwork connected to any job that a PTW would have anyway
