I have worked in construction for a few years; and I have fully supported fencing sites to keep kids off site.

Search 'Diggerland' and you see a theme park in Castleford set up for children and adults to enjoy rides in construction plant.

I hate to be a health and safety killjoy, but is this a step too far?

I would like to think that their 'induction' onto the theme park includes the advice that normally children should never play on a construction site - and presumably all activities are closely supervised. I think this is perhaps a better way to introduce kids (and some less responsible adults!) to the dangers of construction plant (it is big and dangerous in the wrong hands), but I accept it may encourage some to climb fences.

My local 'Diggerland' seems to be an attraction for dads as much as the kids! It is the ultimate in 'Tonka toys'.

When I worked for a civil engineering contractor (2003-2006), we used to hold SPLAT! safety sessions on a dummy building site for kids every summer holidays, all organised through the local schools - does anyone still do this?

It could be developed to 'DEMOLITION LAND' or 'SCAFFOLDING LAND'; although I do like the idea of SPLAT [depends on who gets splatted].

I used to be involved in help run 'Crucial Crew' training days aimed at Primary 7 kids just before they went to High School. This was a rig up of many scenarios such as fire, RTA, speaking to strangers and a dummy construction site to name a few.

There is now an excellent facility in Edinburgh sponsored by IOSH Branch called the 'Risk factory' - well worth a visit if up this way

There are several Diggerland parks in UK. they started in Strood and spead north. they have been around for many years now and are nothing new. they did have an unfortunate accident and have tightened up their health and safety. the machines are adapted to restrict their performance and i have seen many happy daddies and small boys with bored mummies after going to Diggerland.
A step too far ... I dont think so; speaking to my neighbours who took their son he was far more aware of the need for safety in construction after Diggerland than ever he was before!

Yeah lets shut 'em down, Alton Towers to, they have a raunaway trasin ride, nothing fun about that!! and as for Disney, dont get me started.

I'm not sure anybody can comment of the situation in diggerland unless they are in possession of all the relevant RA's/MS's etc. to comment without all the information is just a waste of time.

I think that you need to congratulate Diggerland on their effective Safety Management.

They have hundreds of incompetent operators walking through their gates daily to operate "dangerous" plant equipment in a controlled environment where everyone has fun and goes home safely.

Personally I think they do a great job on Risk Management and Industry could learn a lot from them.

Well Done Diggerland !!
