I work for a construction company and have been requested by my managers to look into obtaining iso14001 accreditation. If anyone can offer any practical advise on who I should source to help me achieve this or if there is other suitable environmental management systems then I would be very grateful for any information.
many thanks

I am not aware of any other environmental management systems, however try a google search for ISO 14001, that should direct you to the various sources of information you would require.

There's also the Acorn Environmental Management Scheme, aimed at SME with the intention of being less beaurocratic. It's run by IEMA and so it has some kudos, and it's based on BS 8555
However it's not as well known as BS 14001 and if you're doing this as a customer requirement, they might not be willing to accept it.
Hope this helps?

There's also the EMAS scheme, more widely known in Europe - a Google should help you find certifiying bodies.

Hi folks,
Acorn is actually a road map and resource kit aimed at acquiring ISO 14000; it's not an SMS in itself. It's designed for SMEs but can be used by anybody, and it can be completed in whole or in part. Accreditation can be gained for each step on the Acorn route, so there's a series of small bites to aim for rather than the whole thing in one go. We are planing to use it to implement 14000 in our retail operation,
John

many thanks I don't know how familiar you are with EMS or how close/far away your organisation would be in achieving it. I have just taken our organisation through OHSAS 18001:2007 and updated our QMS 9001:2000 management system to 9001:2008. My next step early next year will be 14001. The process for all of these systems is the same. May I suggest that you carry out a gap analysis first. If you obtain a copy of the 14001 standard and work through it clause by clause. This will establish the procedures and processes needed to meet the standard. You could cross refer your existing procedures to each clause. This will enable you to identify existing procedures or processes you need to update to meet compliance or identify procedures your organisation will need to put in place. There is no-one who knows your business and processes better than you. If you can avoid using consultants to write your procedures you will get better value from the system as you will understand the process better. You can then get a certifying organisation to carry out an audit. There is also a guide you can buy for implementing the system. (I think it is 14004) It will detail each clause of 14001 and give you a list of the processes you need to meet the standard and the various internal documents that will support compliance. Hope this helps?
