You should become an accredited auditor to undertake credible audits otherwise anything you do can be questioned
Access the British Standards web site and telephone them to gain more knowledge

It's really the IRCA web site you need to look at they are the body responsible for the International Register of Certified Auditors and should have a list of bodies who can deliver the training to their standards. BSI will do the training, but I should shop around. If you are looking to become certified to any of these standards the accreditation body you have selected may be able to offer you the training - just make sure it is IRCA approved though.
Dependant on the level of training you require you would start with a 5 day Auditor course in 9001 - then you can do conversion courses to 14001 and 18001 which are 3 day. I would suggest getting someone who has done these courses to give you a one day briefing on what it entails so you are not going in cold. You need some understanding of the standards.
I am based in Nottingham - I am happy to help if you need it. I am an IRCA registered auditor for all three standards.

This is just a response on the IRCA Lead Auditors course everything stated by Ang is correct for one point. If you really want to go into auditing make sure that your knowledge, experience reflects the stand ard you are following. I did the 5 day course and I concentrated on the BS OHSAS 18001 standard. Remember whether you are independent or work for a company the way that you provide advice and support will be stipulated on the scope of audit and negoiating objectives with your Client. Doing the other 3 day courses is not a bad thing it will streghten your position if they are already working to some of those standards.
So please ensure that the audit reflects that position.
Kind regards
