What are the safety criterias with respect to the dimensions of circular shafts while carrying out underground constructions? If the depth of the shaft is 45 m and has to accomodate drilling rigs and 30 personnel minimum at peak hours, what would be the standard requirement of the diameter of these circular shafts?

Can someone help?? Additionally if someone has any document on safety criterias for shafts, then please forward it to me.

It sounds like you are "out of your depth here"?

Sorry I couldn't resit that.

I haven't a clue either but there is probably some good guidance if you look at HSE web site, construction, and you could also try Google.

Best of luck.

Surely the diameter of the shafts is down to the design. The shaft has to be big enough for the TBM to be lowered to the bottom and set up and to allow other equipment/ materials and personnel to lowered in and raised out along with an escape route such as tempory staircase or ladders.
Other criteria could involve what the ground conditions are, how is the shaft being constructed, is it a ring lined with concrete or steel segments, is a diaphragm wall system being used?

A good source of information is the British Tunneling Association
