This year our facilities management have decided to only use salt on footpaths etc during cold spells as it is cheaper than a salt/ grit mix. Unfortunately it does not appear to be very successful at the moment.

Can anyone point me in the direction of any evidence as to the benefits of one over the other. So far a quick internet search has not provided any useful information.

Hi John,

In a previous role I sourced an alternative from a company called Basic Solutions - the benifits of which were substantial (environmentally friendly, no corrosion, less usage, no mess etc). I presume they are still operating - they supplied a table which compared coverage rate with that of rock salt which helped justify our switch to them. Try getting in touch with them and seeing if they can help.

Hi John,
Ours have done the same (although I don't know the reasons for doing so as the facilities manager is off sick). Oddly, my impression of its effectiveness is the reverse of yours. I wonder if what you put it on has any bearing?
