Hi there, I wonder if anyone could give me some advice on what Nebosh certificate/award would benefit me most in making a career path into the renewable energy market , in a health and safety capacity.
I obtained a General certificate in November but as of yet I have had no luck employment wise. I have 4 years construction site management experience with project management, Scaffold and site safety management certificates and I have svq awards in my trade. I also have a degree which is not relevant to my work , but is still a degree. I have been applying for jobs in the Health and safety sector since September but have not managed to obtain a single interview!
I think that with the jobs I have been applying for, mainly construction based/cdmc/ to anything at all recently, havin APSn membership probably would have been beneficial?
As I mentioned before my main aim is to get into the Renewable energy market, which I have applied to several times before through Siemens directly and various other agency classifeds. Is there a certificate/award that I could obtain that would be more attractive to employers in this sector?

The NGC is probably the first stepping stone for many people coming into this profession. If you are currently working in the construction industry and have safety professionals working with you maybe the first step would be to ask them if you could shadow them occasionally.
IOSH branch meetings are always a good idea, you can locate them on this website.

In terms of renewably energy and getting on the first rungs of the ladder, this wont be easy due the economic factors. Many experienced Chartered Practitioners with years of experience are out of work and will be seeking jobs that you may also be looking at. It’s a sad fact but when times are hard many safety professionals are made redundant .

Don’t give up though, you can contact IOSH direct and ask about further academic courses. In the meantime have you thought about any voluntary work? An environmental course would also be a great advantage. Don’t forget to address all the routes to gaining chartered status if you do contact IOSH (you will get a non-biased view).

Hope it all goes well and good luck!
