Hi,
Has anyone out there successfully completed this course and if so could you kindly provide me an evaluation of its worth?
I am thinking of doing the course early 2010 but I am self funding and it is not cheap at around 2K inc hotel and travelling.
Note the BSI version offers 40 CPD points.
Cheers
Gary

It all depends on what you want it for, I attended and would say I got a great deal from the course. It has enabled me to raise the profile of H&S within the work place and workforce, it has assisted in me maintaining mabnagement systems and identifying needs. The workplace has benefitted as we have attained BSC 5 star (like the system or not) for the past two years. It also helped me to state a case for a pay rise by identifying the improvements as above.
I am now going onto the advanced as the company see as beneficial so will also improve my CV.
I didn't self fund, but found it valuble to my practice.

I did this course with IOSH and it has been of great benefit to me on various levels. Obviously my understanding of 18001 greatly improved and so did our system as a direct result.
As mentioned above, it does depend on what you want the qualification for. I work with 18001 so it fits nicely with what I do. Even so, I'd recommend it even though you are self-funding.
Not only that, I was fortunate enough to be on the course with a fantastic bunch of people and the entire week ended up being one of the funniest training courses I've ever taken on! We learned a thing or two into the bargain ;) That probably won't help with your original question though, sorry.

The primary reason for doing the course is to enhance my existing knowledge of auditing HS systems. I am already a 'lead auditor' and compliance manager for a 9001/14001 system and I am now looking to extend system scope to include the company HS arrangements under 18001. The existing HS system has been stand alone and broadly built on HSG 65 principles so there are relatively minor adjustments required to achieve this aim. I thought that this course would help me understand the process of changing to 18001 and HS auditing. My existing quals are based on 9001 and 14001 only, although i guess the principle will be the same.
What was the 'test' like at the end of the week?
Btw the reason for self-funding is that I am planning to do some consultancy work next year and think this will help.
Cheers

I am completing the LRQA course in January and self-funding it. Unlike you I do not have any other qualifications for 9001 or 14001, but I think the principles are fairly generic from my reading of 18002. I am an independant consultant working in the rail/construction industries and see this qualification as a progressive step forward. I have also agreed in principle to conduct internal audits on the various projects with the company I am currently engaged with. Hoping this will be much needed experience before one day venturing into external audits.
Happy to provide more feedback once I have completed and hopefully...passed the course.

Gary,
if you are already a qualified 9001 lead auditor you can do an "upgrade" which is two or three days (therefore cheaper).

Gary, the test at the end of the week wasn't too demanding to be honest. But, I did make sure to pay attention all week which was probably a good idea ;)
In between the laughs obviously.
Your experience with 9001/14001 will help you with this course I'm sure.
I didn't know about the upgrade though, so that's a bonus as well.

If you have already completed a lead audit qualification in 9001/14001 and an H&S background then it would be enough to do a one day in-depth 18001 foundation course which goes into the standard in detail which is what you are essentially looking for if you already have a lead audit qualification.
Of the courses I have taught which are generally 3 days for an internal auditor level 18001 the first day is an indepth look at the standard the following 2 days are on auditing principles.
I am not sure where you are based to know if there are providers close by to you. (it would certainly be substanially less than 2k!)

I just realised you are linked to the North of Scotland branch, I am based in Aberdeen so I know the course I am speaking about runs in the Aberdeen area which might be of use to you.
Even if you wish to go down the lines of the full internal audit course for 18001 it would be in the realm of £800-£1000 rather than 2k.
You can contact me on quensh@tiscali.co.uk if you would like the details of the provider who runs the course in Aberdeen.
