Hi Everyone.
I have noticed that many businesses in my area (Ireland), have not attempted to make their car parks or entrances to buildings safe. No grit, salt etc used. Many are large businesses. It appears that they all are under the impression they dont have to do anything to make the place safe.
What is the situation in the UK, do businesses use salt/grit to make the places safe?

Seamus,
They are wrong. Read the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act with regard to safe access and egress. Insurance companies may ask to see receipts for rock salt or evidence of preventative measures put in place.

Yes I thought they still must all that is reasonably practical to make the place safe. I wonder what are the H.S.A. doing at this time !

Its the usual answer, providing it is a "workplace" then the HSWA and subsequent regs aply i.e Hazards, Risk Assessments and Controls put in place. Failure to do so, that results in RIDDOR reportable accidents may result in HSE/LA investigations or civil action by the injured party. Civil action could result either way.
Hope this helps
