If one of our employees injures his hand & fingers (badly bruised) - are we right in requesting him to obtain a letter of confirmation (i.e. "fit for work") before he returns to work (HGV driving job) - from a hospital or his GP (hand was examined / X-rayed at hospital - told him to "rest it" nothing broken).

If he's not been signed off sick by anyone then I don't know that you can request for him to be signed back on - you could refer him t o Occupational Health if you have that service internally or externally or try writing to his GP or the hospital where he was seen but this will delay his return to work quite considerably... sorry to be so unhelpful but it's a tricky one really.

Do you have a driver assessor? assess before he resumes full time duties. Is it possible to double man a vehicle, the IP may be alright on assessment but 4.5hrs (max) behind the wheel may be to much.
Which hand, motorway or around town? just a couple of things you could consider Regards Andy

Thanks for the above - as has been said, if hes not been signed off (i.e. unfit for work) - then we cant really ask for a letter signing him back! (fit for work) - therefore if he claims he is OK to carry out his duties - then we accept him back (note - he IS keen to return to work as he may / will loose pay!!). Might be a good idea to monitor him (to ensure he is able to drive / carry out his duties).
