Hi, In our office we have two ladies in our office who are having problems with static discharge. Being an electronics company I've supplied dischrge strapes and earthing plugs, but now seek to cure the problem but at a loss as to what may be causing it. Apart from moving to retrieve an odd file they sit at their desks most of the time. All suggestions gratefully received. Badger

had a similar problem in an office where there was metal filing cabinets and carpet tiles, this seemed to encourage the static, also as a few PCs in there the atmosphere was dry, we encouraged the provision of pot plants and water holders on the radiators to help keep some moisture in the atmosphere, this seemed to reduce the problem

A hand-operated spray, filled with a dilute water/washing-up liquid mix. Apply a mist to the carpet, and repeat applications as and when required. Regards, Ross

Sometimes also called Cable Bug. Advice other than that already given seems to be use natural fibre carpets not synthetic and keep dust and paper fibres to a minimum. Hope this helps Might be worth just double checking, if you haven't already, that they aren't getting bitten by any little nasties

Thanks for responses. The ladies like the idea of pot plants and misting the carpet, so we shall see. As for the bitey things havent seen any of them (yet!). Badger

I recall from schoolboy physics lessons that if you rub together two people hard enough can generate static and create sparks! Something to do with different materials. Have they got silk knickers while your office is carpetted with cheap nylon? Or perhaps it's the other way round?

Badger, I would be loathed to mention the possibility of creepy crawlies to anyone in the office as they will surely start scratching and nothing will be able to convince them otherwise. I speak from experience. Ben

I'm awaiting the forum to test out the rubbing two people together and the results... On a seperate note, i used to suffer this a little and was able to point at colleagues ears and spark them, had loads of fun. Seem to have started again, but the office environment i'm in hasn't changed since we relocated.

Apparently if you do rub people together you can stick them to a wall... and it's snowing! (of no relevance to the thread)

The ladies concerned have replied 'What are silk knickers!?' and no I cannot rub myself with them ... or is that ... I'm not allowed to rub them up the wrong way! Badger Snowing again ...

Badger Like RB said. Buy some Febreeze(or other brand) fabric reshner treatment and spray the floor, if anything the place will smell nice. Or Chain everyone together and link it to a huge homebrew capacitor made from a wheely bin and alternate layers of brown paper and tinfoil. Connect this to a DC inverter and power the PC's with it. Every little helps in the recession. Jeff

Not come across it before, but suppose that it is similar to when you get out of some cars and touch the door. If you do rub two people together, can you then stick them on the celing :-) ?

The snow has stopped here. Be careful rubbing people together, don't two boy scouts rubbed together start a fire? On a serious note, but with some comedy, I once read in the FIRE magazine, many years ago, of a lady who blew herself off a toiltet. Apparently when she had finished, the movement of her underwear created a spark that ignited the methane inside the pan. This caused her to fall forward. I kid you not! Perhaps a warning should be given to these two ladies as they create static and could incur a similar fate?

I just googled my subject and found the following report on the link following. A woman here was fairly seriously injured aboard ship, when the toilet bowl was partially empty of water and suer gases came back into the cubicle. Underwear on nylons provided the spark, and she was literally blown off the seat. http://www.mail-archive.com/chipdir-l@fatcity.com/msg00015.html Slightly different to my story but very similar.
