Hi all

does anyone have any experience with the shredding of compact discs? Our IT dept has a large number of discs that need to be destroyed.

has anyone come across any hazzards doing this job? In particular I was thinking along the COSHH issues (dust particles etc) rather than the shredding machine etc

many thanks

I have never tried shredding them.

However, I do know that you can guillotine them very easily. We did this when we wanted to make ultra-cheap, safe mirrors for a children's activity.

Mike, have you done anything in regards to the dust caused by normal shredding? As even that can create a hell of a lot of dust. We're moving our shredders into a room unused for anything, purely so we don't have the risk of dust in the air close to people working.

Mike,

Depending on how many you have do they have to be shredded?
Could they not be sent as waste for incineration or some other destruction method therefore your guys are not at risk from dust or sharp residues.

The bulk of the disc is polycarbonate. I have found a short article online here about the health effects of breathing polycarbonate dust:

I'd have thought the cut edges were far from child-friendly unless you sandpapered them?

Although the PC dust is safe, breaking apart discs generates tiny aluminium (conductive) shards, so one thing to be careful of is that they're not being sucked into the cooler of some expensive electronic whassisname sitting on the desk next to the shredder.

We definitely thought of that. I cannot recall now whether they needed rounding off or not. It's a few years ago. We do try to idiot-proof our experiments for children.
