Hi,

Please could someone confirm if anemometers (air-flow meters) need to be calibrated for checking L.E.V. systems.

Thank you

Hi Jim,

It greatly depends on the degree of accuracy you need. But I would say yes, anything that "checks" the validity of a control measure should be calibrated - otherwise you have little or no defence if someone decides that your machine is wrong.

In one of my previous employments I arranged for annual calibrations of all the measuring devices (from noise meters to anemometers and on).

Hope this helps.

Jim

If you just want to do a quick check that a system is doing more or less what it should be, no calibration is needed. However, if you want your figures to survive scrutiny by an inspector or, heaven forfend, a court, then yes, calibration is necessary.

Great, thanks for the quick response. I'll ensure it's included in the calibration schedule.

Thanks again.

Jim,
See http://www.hse.gov.uk/fo...lops/fod/inspect/lev.pdf
Page 81; which states "Once the airflow indicator has been installed it needs to be calibrated. This should be done when the LEV system is commissioned. It should be re-checked at the annual thorough examination and test when hood airflow rates are measured."
If the anemometer is being used to check the calibration of the airflow indicator, or confirm performance based on calculations from the commisioning report, the anemometer would require to be calibrated.

Regards,
Ross
