Hi all

my daughter loves Peppa Pig, who now is on the BBC news webpage. Some parent has moaned that within the animation, Peppa is not wearing a seatbelt and due to that their child also refused. What next? Superman having to have flashing lights when he takes off and lands?

Any others for a Friday discussion on this matter?

I wouldn't be happy with any talking pig driving a car. It is fundamentally unsafe. The talking pig regulations are long overdue. I have also noticed on Peppa Pig that Daddy pig regularly fixes the computer - that has caused me no end of extra work at home with requests from my 2 year old to fix anything that remotely looks like a computer. Maybe I remind her of daddy pig...

It is probably just as well that Tom and Jerry or roadrunner are not seen so much on TV these days or they would probably be banned or be preceded by some sort of government health warning!

I might understand if Peppa was being intentionally used to convey a safety message but it is just a cartoon!

If parenting skills are so pathetically poor that a mother cannot explain to her little cherub that she is not a pig then I think we as a nation have more to worry about than if fictional characters wear protective devices or not!

well, apparently in Canada all superman costumes came with a warning notice to say it doesn't actually come with the super powers... I wonder if that is the case here in the UK too

Don't forget Bob the Builder hanging off the outside of Scoop.

No, sorry that was the safety officer at an outdoor event I attended in the summer standing on the step of the tractor driving through public areas doing a litter pick!!

No wonder kids do the same as cartoon characters when they see idiots doing what this "safety professional" was up to!

dunno what channels you get but Tom and Jerry is on every day on some of the kid's channels. I was even forced to watch an episode of the original Rainbow the other day. Cruel and unusual punishment that. So many kid's channels have old programmes on. Risk assessment for Batfink 'my wings are like shields of steel' required if undertaking Thames Valley firearms instruction, or motorbike licence photocopy for Square Bear available?

SafetySmurf, i am getting worried about you!!

While on the subject though of animated characters, how would the H&S bods that this week have being debating "confined spaces" deal with Bugs Bunny??

I’m trying very hard not to get involved with this; also I’m not sure how this ‘new forum’ works, so I may be responding to the wrong topic!

A few thoughts –

Children are very impressionable; for example my Grandson always insists on wearing the safety belt in his little electric car; because this is the norm we have set within our family when travelling in ‘grown up’ cars.

How often do we see personalities and politicians on the TV not wearing safety belts when riding in cars, particularly in the back seats; thereby flouting the law and conveying an extremely bad precedent to the many impressionable ‘grown ups’.

There’s much talk about why compliance with health and safety law is important, becoming part of the school curriculum; so the media must ensure continuity.

That some parent has ‘moaned’ would suggest to me that other parents may feel the same way -
For a reality check, take a look at this -

Going to kick-up my intergalactic space raider now

I have no issue with showing a good example but that should not mean we have to have a Peppa Pig episode where their little red car is involved in a RTC and they are all taken to hospital! Let kids be kids. This reminds me of those Australian gits who slated Santa for being a bad role model - obese, drinks too much etc. That is an adult perspective, not a young child's, who is allowed to believe in nonsense until they become a little more cynical. Santa is not for adults and neither is Peppa. Bleedin' killjoys, nothing to do with health and safety.

What about the original Wombles picking all that waste up with no PPE and not a thought of needle stick injuries or Leptospirosis.

Don't even get me started on Hector's House with that Kiki the frog doing her WAH peering over the wall without her ladder being footed. Why on earth didn't she hire a tower scaffold?
