Would other forum users be able to share with me what specification/type of thermometer they use for Legionella temperature checks?

Our water hygiene company are saying that we need digital, callibrated thermometers and that they and the probes need calibrating annually. We have 50 or so sites so this is a significant outlay at £200 each.

Would a digital thermometer without calibration or self calibrating thermometer do the job?

Thanks for your thoughts.

I am a bit of a luddite, but what is wrong with an old fashioned glass thermometer which can be annually calibrated with ice/water mix and/or boiling water. Ten a penny so if one gets lost or broken then no problem.

Can't see a need for calibrated thermometers just to carry out 'checks'. It's a bit like exposure levels to (say) noise or fumes - use a basic noise meter, or indicator tubes respectively to get an indication of the exposure and if you find you are close to a regulatory limit get something more accurate to take the measurements.

I would expect a consultant undertaking a Legionella survey to use good quality calibrated equipment, but not for general checks.

OK - shoot me down in flames all you consultants! :-)

Do they happen to supply these thermometers?

Used to be one of these consultants, and while we used the £200 calibrated probes we recommended that our clients only needed the old fashioned glass thermometers. Cheap, easy to use and very accurate!

If you are looking for thermometers and other reasonably priced measuring instruments its worth checking out the ATP site

Hello

we brought some Waterproof pen-type thermometers from Seton.

Item code ELE54, and they cost £20.80 each. They do the job fine for us, and they are digital ones.

hope that helps.

James.
