I have been asked to provide spillage training to the safety marshals. I am a little concerned that i am not going to do the subject justice as we have very small quantities on site and no past incidents. I am finding difficult to find the right level to pitch the training at. I was at first just going to produce a guidence note to highlight the procedure and then carry out a moke spillage to test their level of awarness. But now that i have looked into it i think i may need a trainined trainer? Does anyone have any experience or information that i can use?

You state that you have 'small quantities' but do not indicate what sort of thing could be spilt. I suggest you ask yourself some questions. Could the material spilt, in the quantities you have, constitute a real threat to health and wellbeing? If so, then you need a procdure for rapid evacuation of everyone except those trained in containing and managing the spill. They will need the right materials to hand to deal with it (including the right equipment to safeguard their health and wellbeing) and there would be a training issue. If you don't have anyone who can deal with such a spill, and it actually happens, then it can be distinctly embarrassing and tricky to deal with. If it does not constitute much of a threat then you have time to draw back from the scene, go and look up the properties of the material, and deal with it as necessary. You might find a spill kit useful to have in the vicinity, and if you think about it beforehand you will undoubtedly save time. Whether you need a special trainer depends a great deal on what you might spill (carcinogens? hydrofluoric acid? do you need breathing apparatus????). More information would help us to give you a better response. Jane
