Guys got an interview next week and need to give a presentation on influencing behavious to improve safety. I obviously have the usual stuff I can use but does anyone have anything innovative or off the wall that would work in a discussion?

Hi safetyinspector,

Rather than go for general management techniques I would possibly emphasise your leadership skills. Talk about your convictions on the matter and the importance of (and how you would develop) trust so employee's would be happy to follow you. Mention your values, beliefes and ethics and demonstarte how they would play an important role in improving safety issues.

Not necessarily innovative, but I hope it helps widen your thought process.

Dunno what yours is like but the attached clearly made it as related to their work as possible, worth a look anyway.

It's not clear what exactly you mean by 'the usual stuff', 'off the wall' (which one(s)?) or indeed 'influence behaviour' (whose behaviour? when? and where?).

What you may regard as 'innovative' in one context, others may regard as routine, old hat or simply irrelevant.

If you want to avoid the elephant traps associated with your question, learn from world leaders in traninng to influence: 'The Art of Woo. Using persuasion to see your ideas', G Richard Shell & Mario Moussa. Capstone, 2008

Apply the article on 'safety culture' by Tim Marsh in the February 2010 issue of SHP; the diagrams are smart.
