Hi can any one please advise me .
I am a single dad of 36 I have a 13 year old boy who lives with me now full time. I have been on benefits for a year now, I am currently going to a adult college to top up on my English and math. Then I plan to go for my NEBOSH general certificate. I am a steel fixer by trade I have done that for the last 20 years but dew to injury's over the years E.G back elbows etc from heavy lifting. This is the reason for a change of career. I am finding it difficult to find funding for the NEBOSH certificate. I have tried Meany options such as asking the job center.Thay suggested a professional and career loan but you have to pay it back as a bank loan and I can't afford to pay those prices. The other was Intraining but as yet IM still waiting for a reply but IM not holding my breath as it will be a loan the same as from a bank. A friend suggested Direct Gov student finance but it seems thay will help if I need to do a course at university but not at a college. I keep coming up against brick walls at ever turn. I am not going to give up on my dream but if any one has been in my situation any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks mark

Hiya Mark

As I live in Scotland, ILA which is a Scottish Government scheme that helps you pay for learning that you can do at a time, place, pace and in a way to suit you. It’s for people who have an income of £22,000 a year or less, or who are on benefits.
If you are 16 or over and living in Scotland, you could get up to £500 towards the cost of learning with a learner account from ILA Scotland. As the NEBOSH cert is not considered as higher learning such as an (HNC), (HND) etc. You can get £200 towards the cost of the course. On the ILA scotland website it provides a range of course providers, I did mine through Aberdeen College. I believe Wales do a similar scheme but not sure about England.

Hope that helps a little.

Hi

Locate your Regional Development Agency (search engine), yours I believe is EEDA (East of England Dev Agy) www.eeda.org.uk

Then hunt their site for funding.

e.g. http://www.bizmapeast.co.uk/finance/

It isn't always straight forward. So you may have to look at their funding/grants etc and see if you can fit into them, rather than just say "this is what I want". Going self employed may assist you with accessing funds and being self employed doesn't have to cost you anything to start - a sole trader has (I think) 3 months to register with the tax office to notify themselves as a sole trader - but you are only paying tax on your profit. JC+ also have schemes to train to become self employed, so more assistance there perhaps. I digress! Other agencies also house themselves at RDA's, I believe UKTI (UK Trade & Industry)and one of the Envirowise type gov agencies (memory slipping now).

So instead of asking for some cash to do your NEBOSH, create a business plan about going green in the steel fixing trade, or look at noise issues from the tools used v the more expensive quieter tools. It really is thinking outside the box, but it is something you can do from home whilst being dad. PM me if you want a more in depth chat..

some of the companies in your neck of the woods advertise that funding is available for some of their courses. If you search 'essex health and safety funding' in your search engine it may come up.

Alternatively, Essex LSC may be worth a punt as they do fund some training but the NEBOSH may not be covered, look online for their details. If you are really lucky someone in the past may have set up a training fund in their will in your area. It was reported in my local newspaper a few weeks ago that a local woman set money aside in her not inconsiderable will to provide aid with funding for those people in my town who want to do Open University courses. My mate at Uni got his MA part funded from such a local course in Warrington, his home town. Not many about but you may be lucky.

Have you considered distance learning? Cheaper than attending a classroom based course. My NEBOSH General cost £1500 and the Nebosh Fire which I am hoping to start soon will be about £450 as it is distance learning.

If you do get on a course give me a PM, I have loads of excellent resources from my course(will not be breaking copyright) and I live just across the border in Hertfordshire so I could drop it off to you. The offer is ongoing.

Good luck

Martin

Hi Mark,

Ask to see a disability advisor at the job centre. I self funded the Nebosh Construction certificate last year, was made redundant in Septemer and because I've had work related back problems in the past, operation included, they made me an appointment with the disability advisor. She arranged funding for me to take the Nebosh Environmental Management certificate. I can't recall the name of the funding programme but I know there's only so much money in the pot so be quick. The E.M. course cost just short of £1000 so it's worth giving it a try, you could probably do the General via distance learning for around the same figure.
Good luck.

I tried to get funding for my courses. I was made redundant and was told even if I was out of work 6 months plus they wouldnt pay for my courses as they were to specialised. Its H&S!!!

Unfortunatley if you set up your own business you cant put yourself through courses and get them for free. You would have to nominate an 'employee'!

Good luck with what ever you decide. Its hard work out there... keep plodding along.

Be a positive role model for your son :)

Hi Emsie

I am sorry, that is not entirely correct. A lot of the funding in the Yorkshire/Humber area fits in entriely the catagory you have mentioned.

One batch of funding for the people on notice or redundancy, another pot for redundant and self referal under x weeks, and then a pot for between that period and 6 months. Then you can progress onto the LWG (work placement) and get minimum wage and some funding to assist you getting a job or creating a job in your LWG placement. Then you get a job and you can get part funding for L3 quals or above.

I guess I should open a "rent a room" and you job seekers can come and get the best of it! LOL

But seriously sometimes its just knowing what to ask and to argue your point. I had one advisor telling me that the NEBOSH was mandatory so they wouldn't fund it.

Regards

Linda
