Am I the only one missing Merv's common sense comments on this forum.
I don't seem to have seen any of his views since the new format came in

Martin,
Merv (if it is he) does appear to be alive and well on the members' forum. Not sure though...

To both of my many fans, yes I am moderately alive and fairly well. I do check in from time to time but find that some of the spirit has gone out of the new style forum. Whatever happened to Friday ? And few of the postings seem to require either my wit or wisdom. such as they are.
In fact I did post on the members forum a week or so back, requesting info on the eventual availability of papers from iosh10. That posting was totally ignored by iosh though one other member did say that they too were awaiting a reply from iosh. Nada as they say in old cathay. (or is it nux vomica ?)
I love you all !!!

I agree Merv; the spirit has dwindled when it comes to commenting on new postings; which seems to be a result of the new style website.
Do others agree?

Anything that discourages Merv from making a comment is certainly bad.
I don't know why the spirit has changed, though I also feel it.
Maybe it's a difficulty getting back to the listings.
This just may be my lack of endeavor and practice though...

Friday's are still here Merv, the forums had a few teething issues and people had difficulty getting started... but they are mostly fixed now thanks to the Webteam. I too always looked forward to Merv's off the wall humour and recipes. Come on Merv, don't let the buggers get you down!

Did you write that Ray, or was it something you wrote???
Similarly, I decided after my institute advised me they didn't have the time to hook me up for several weeks, that I didn't have as much time as before to contribute.

Nice to see you're still around Merv...
I might have made a mistake back in November? Posted: 11 November 2009 14:03:19 "Merv has been spotted hiding behind the nom-de-plume (or should that be ('nom-de-forum') of 'Frenchie'."
Anyone seen or heard from Chris Packham on the new forums?
I miss the old style and I think the forums have become much less fun... Shame! Just done a search on my name (looking for the posting above...) and realise that almost half of my posts on the new forum have been whinges... Which suggests I personally may have lost the urge to contribute positively. So probably best not to contribute at all?
So unless I happen to spot something extremely interesting or stupid... I guess this is maybe goodbye from me....
So long and thanks for all the fish.
Steve

The new forum is not as much fun and people are less motivated to contribute - is that what we are saying.
Hmm..... whose forum is this.
How is it that a reformat and some new rules that we have to learn (and which to me seem to have got sorted now) shouldn't stop us sharing the dialogue and banter that spurs on and motivates other fellow professionals.
I for one am inspired to post at least once a week to try and recover the old spirit
cheers all and welcome back Merv

I think it's a lot to do with the 15 minute auto log out and the fact that we are not returned to the posting we were browsing following the log in process.
I used to keep the old forum open in my browser and dip in an out between doing some work. I don't do that any more.
Bye Steve... :-(

I would like to claim my above post was intended as a whacky piece of humour. The truth is a Mod spotted something the new swear filter did not!
I commented: We enjoy Merv's off the wall sense humour and his recipes, don't let the... get you down. Hence the removal for the expletive, even though it was not meant in an offensive manner.
I would also like to make a general comment which some have also commented and others alluded to, that the new forum does not seem so 'user friendly' or inspiring to use. I am disappointed with the end result and I feel that IOSH could have done much better. The swear filter also leaves alot to be desired. What happended to good old moderating and common sense?

Swear in Dutch, the filter doesn't pick it up, or invent your own swear words !!!

Swear in Dutch, the filter doesn't pick it up, or invent your own swear words !!! The problem would be that only RayRapp would know what they meant so it wouldn't make a difference to us. He would have to try and explain what each word represented and the swear filter would blank it out.

tee hee!
The system's swear filter does not have a brain. We Mods, on the other hand, do. We have been known to resort to online translators on occasions!

Hey Farrell
I lived in South Africa for a few years and learnt to speak Afrikaans which is a derivative of the Dutch language. If I throw in a couple of Afrikaans expletives, do you think I could confuse the swear filter and bamboozle the Moderators as well - lol

Time, people, please!
We have established the whereabouts of Merv, job done.
This topic has now degenerated into a discussion of swear words, swear word filters, etc. The Mods will hide anything that appears to be unacceptable, including cod latin.
We will refrain from demanding 100 lines for not being able to spell the words (as in the 'Life of Brian'), but we do have a sense of humour (honest).
This topic is now closed. Jane
