Hi,
I came across a newly installed (retro fitted) isolator switch on a piece of equipments main control panel today. It is the first time i have seen a new isolator switch that is not of the configuration of of yellow background and heavy duty red lockable switch- which appears on all new equipment that has been purchased previously. The newly fitted isolator is lockable but it is old fashioned looking black switch onn silver background. My first thought was that it was canabalised from another machine but it was purchased from reputable supplier. Can anyone help with the requirements? Thanks

safetyman2010,
Firstly if it is a point of isolation and is NOT required for emergency use it does NOT need to be yellow/red.
HOWEVER IF it is suitable/required for emergency use then it must be Y/R.
Almost all isolators are available in R/Y or Black/Grey depending on application.
The Y/R are almost always more expensive!
IF the equipment is CE marked and the "retrofitter" has changed from Y/R to Bl/Gr then they must re CE the machine themselves to prove that it still meets the EHSR of the relevant machinery standards etc. As they have chenged the OEM design of the equipment and thus must take responsibility for this change.
(Well that's what I was taught/told and had to do!)

What's the panel for?
What's the switch disconnector for?
See EN 60204 re machinery safety
EN 60439 re control and switchear.
