Does anyone have any advice for a procedure for employees stocking freezers in a retail environment, i.e. how long they should work in these temperatures and should they be allowed to work alone? I mean what happens if they slipped and knocked themselves out? Surely that cannot be safe working practice, but it is not always practical to schedule two employees for a task that only requires one. Any advice appreciated. Paul

The HSE's warehouse guide also has a section on cold working. Also free from the HSE website. Basically: Correct warm clothing. Regular breaks. Warm rest area. Also can use personal alarms (some will set off if the wearer does not remain vertical for example) or regular checks by other staff.
