Hi,
Have my first interview next week (H.S.E. Officer) since passing my Nebosh construction, other than obvious things like researching the company any pearls of wisdom would be welcome to help me along the way.
The company has a diverse business range...Sewer jetting & CCTV inspections, portaloo hire, hazardous material disposal, plant hire, Industrial sludge removal, residential septic tank supply and emptying, water tanker hire and contaminated land clearance, outside of the ususal any suggestions to relevant legislation I may have missed would be grateful.

Thanks

DNW

Looks to me that this company are looking for an environmentalist as well as a safety adviser. As long as you have the basic understanding of safety and environmental legislation you should feel confident in an interview.

Actually sitting the Nebosh Environmental on Friday, probably got me the interview, just didn't want to forget any particular legislation that may be relevant to the work involved. Already found a few that I wasn't particularly aware of such as carriage of dangerous goods/ADR regs.

Cheers

DNW - do not undersell yourself! Do you have any knowledge of COSHH??

I am titled "senior advisor" but I do not do ADR, COSHH, training, etc.

I am expected to - and will manage the requirements of my own area and will ask for asssistance in areas outwith my knowledge / control.

My company have "focal points" that are experts in their own fields and they will guide me if I need their help. And I will ask because if it is wrong, people will get killed!

But no person can know everything - and multi million pound contracts will not be managed safely by one person!

PM me if you wish to talk off forum

David

You could always ask how they get employees involved in H&S? Do they have safety reps/unions etc? Its a good way of turning the question back to the employer, it may make them think a little!

Good luck!

It seems from the job title 'HSE Officer' that they are looking for a person who can ensure 'conformance', so I would err on the side of people skills and not worry so much about current knowledge, which you can pick up as you go along. It is lilkely that they will want to see the 'real' you - confident in dealing with other people, with some of your own personal examples. How you look and come across will also sway them, I'm sure.

try to turn the interview around and control it if poss - ask them what they want / what they see as blockages and tell them how you can solve their problems - try to find out who is on the panel and what their interests are then tune your self to those areas

I now of one case where the interviewer was a real football fan and the candidate 'accidentially' had a season ticket on the table on top of their notes - the interview went well even though the season ticket was for another person as the interviewe did not like football but had done enough football study to get through!

All is fare in love & war
