Hi Just after a bit of advice on best practices for dismantling, assembling the racking or adjusting shelf levels, they are Esmena systems with wooden slats in the center. Unable to find anything specific on HSE or anywhere else. The racking is layed out back to back and it is that side of the racks where the problems arise, for the open sides it fairly easy as we use a lifting cage and a flt for access. For the back to back it requires getting out of the cage on to the racking inbetween the racks to remove the beams, this the part that i have the issues. We use harnesses and have to hook up to the frames whist doing this but whilst moving in the racking we are not hooked up to anything and i personally feel this to be unsafe to do as we are fairly high from ground level and the slats feel quite uneasy underfoot. Looking, best practice advice, should this be undertaken by trained personel?, what is the requirement for training? and any legislative compliance required. thanks sorry for going on a bit ..lol

Hi Dazbrit, Issues surrounding the modfication of racking were last discussed on this thread; http://forum.iosh.co.uk/...aspx?g=posts&t=92434 You might find some useful information there.

Have you asked the technical people at the Esmena UK office?

Daxbrit said "but whilst moving in the racking we are not hooked up to anything and i personally feel this to be unsafe to do as we are fairly high from ground level and the slats feel quite uneasy underfoot" If i have read this correctly then, This is a breach of the HSWA and W@H regs, I advise you stop it immediatly, before some one gets hurt.

OK, I may have jumped a little early with the above thread. You may be in breach of the above mentioned. But i would need more information to be sure. Just be aware that in my opinion you may be in breach of the above mentioned and consider the consequencies if i am right and you do nothing.

this is why i am looking for the advice as the company health and safety manager has no experience in health and safety untill about 5 months ago but that is another matter completly which i have a lot of issues with!. I am experianced in health and safety but that was mainly in the manufacturing sector, logistics and warehousing is a little new to me. I have raised the fact that moving within the racking at any height really is in breach of even basic health and safety legislation and for the moment any racking modifications have been stopped.
