With the new IOSH website taking hold we all witnessed a drop in topics being discussed.
To now witness members debating health & safety interpretation more often; it’s great to see the old forum popularity returning to the new style website.
That’s what made this website so good.
May the debates continue!!!

I agree, I get lots from this discussion forum, I think it's brilliant.
It is good to see so many people disagreeing with my views, better than being at work ha ha.

I also agree, but they will never return to the interaction of the old bulletin board until we resolve this stupid auto logout after 15 minutes!!!
I always used to remain connected during the day and dip in and out of the forum between work during the day and can no longer do that.
This is what is mainly killing this new forum!

As a fairly new member I find it's not just the debate but sharing of advice and your experiences that has been so useful to me.

Although it is a mild pain, I do see that IOSH (having now combined forum and personal data (including payment records) elements) have to have some protection of those data they collect.
I can keep on eye on the forums by having them open but not logged in. Maybe the effort of logging in will deter some of the more filppant one-liners we used to suffer from?
Have a look at the posting history of most of us and we tend to go in bursts - having logged in, we make the most of the effort (which amounts to what? 30 seconds?).
Not perfect - but far from something which should 'kill' a forum. I find the login taking me back to the forums home far more annoying ... and that would not be down to data protection, just poor coding.

Tabs. The requirement for an auto-logout was fairly comprehensively rubbished back in November in the "forum improvements for web team" sticky thread by a poster who sounded as though he knew what he was talking about. I can't see that anyone from IOSH ever came back with a satisfactory response to the points he raised other than saying they would look into it.
I can choose to stay logged in all day to E-Bay if I want. Much more potential for someone to sneak in and abuse my credit card than IOSH will ever have!

I agree somewhat that it is the failure to return to the last viewed post that might be the biggest problem (although tonight it did seem to do that???).
As Heather said though, there appears to be no significant reason why members cannot elect to remain logged in and this is what I feel has killed the spontaneity of the old forums...
Perhaps the biggest issue of all is the total lack of any feedback from IOSH?

Perhaps, just perhaps, the loss of "interaction and "spontaneity" might be good things and the 15 minute log out might be a blessing in disguise. The Old Forum sometimes gave the impression of being a bit cliquish with the usual contributors chatting away to the usual contributors, and sometimes it did turn into a chat room. Now cliques are great if you are inside one but they can be a bit off-putting if you are not and they can deter the newcomer unless he/she is determined. And in place of spontaneity perhaps there is now more reasoned and thoughtful comment......but (reading this!) perhaps not. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Just to confirm that the function to stay with the selected post after having to log in now seems to have been adressed. That does make it better, but I would still like the option of choosing how long I wish to be connected...
