I have spoken to a multitude of HSE advisors and managers in my search for the Hale and Hale model relating to behavioural safety. Not a single person that I have spoken with has come across it. Google is no help either! Does anybody out there have information on this specific model?

Bruce - I did not know about the IOSH upgrade questions. I did not even know of the existence of the open book cross over NVQ exam. Who would I find out more from please?

Martin W, Once you have submitted your NVQ4 Occupational safety and Health in practice certificate to our membership department and have been regraded to a Graduate member you will recieve your Graduate certificate along with an IPD registration form. Iniital Professional Development (IPD) is a one off process that will take you from Graduate membership to Chartered membership. Which route you take through IPD will depend on the qualification that takes you to Graduate status. In the case of the NVQ4 this will mean an open book assessment and then a Peer Review Interview. Once you have registered for IPD you will recieve a pack of information that will explain what these entail further. As the open book assessment is 'open' we don't mind where members get their information form. Asking for pointers to information is perfectly acceptable. The member will then have to extract the salient points from that information and use it to formulate an answer to the question in their own words within the word count. Members are not permitted to quote verbatim, if they do then they could potentially be disqualified from the assessment. We also recommend that members use more than one source of information for their answers. Don't just find the first reference to the topic and use that as your sole reference look at two or three and then pick the key points from each.

Hi, it is some time since I covered this, but as I recall it is about people's perception of risk and how it is made is made up of a combination of presentened and expected information, what they think will happen next and what could happen next. People who continually breech safety rules and get away with it have a different perception of the risk, as their expectation moves away from what may happen. We get locked into a cycle which continually reinforces this "it can't happen to me" perception until an event occurs which makes us re-evaulate our perception of the risk, unfortunantly this tends to happen after someone has been hurt.

I agree, this shouldnt be on this forum (like many of these type of 'open' questions; anyway its friday sooooo. Hale & hale I looked at during the good ol nebosh cert day (1996 oh god). I think its liste din teh nebosh books (st john holts) and our old bible the Safety at Work (ridley/channing).
But I think (and not reading everyone's comments)..... ...it deals with people perceptions of work environment and information that leads to decision making resulting in a their behaviour. This probably then goes back to basics on human behaviour and behavioural safety awareness.
Iss there any books out there that lists all the safety guru's techniques and sytematic thinkings; I know there are several on quality guru's but boy wouldnt that stop us buying so many different books when we come into the 'HSEQA game'.
Life is a game, but not everyone plays by your rules............

Geez, you dont read the website for many weeks and you see glitches like this. Oh well, hope the info was useful (I think I seen hale & hale in one of the other forums as well. You guys could network and agree findings.....

Rather than be unhelpful and sarcastic, say nothing or give our users some help and support!!! All too often 'mature' H&S practitioners belittle our 'colleagues' trying to improve themselves!! Don't!!

pin1966 - Don't get hung up on Hale and Hale... if you know anything about behavioural safety at all then you will grasp this no problem (assuming Stewart passed the model on to you). I had no idea about it and recently sat the open book exam. I asked a few guys about it and received some 'weird' info back!!!! The day before the exam was due in, my manager revelled he had an eighty slide IOSH presentation on this!!! As soon as I viewed the flow diagram all was clear (and yes, I had to completely re-write my open book answer) ...... Why oh why do people have to complicate information, do they think it makes them look good? It is not rocket science... just like everything else we do ... the biggest part of my job is unravelling the mess so called safety professionals create, and churn it into lay-mans language.
Keep it simple guys and girls .... please
