hi..... I am working as a HSE professional in CONSTRUCTION Company in Oman. We do carry out lot of lifting activity. we are planning to lift 220 MT capacity load, In lifting plan they have shown only the spreader beam in lifting arrangement, no other details about the spreader beam is mentioned. When I discussed with the Erection team, they said that the speared beam is used here to keep a sling away each other and it is not going to take any load. Whether it is safe to allow the same or any other requirement is needed. Please advice how to handle the issue. Regards, S.Murugan, GradIOSH

It is difficult to imagine a spreader beam not taking a load, unless it really is just a device that separates the slings (and even then it will experience forces). If it does not take any load, you could make it out of paper. It might help to challenge them in this way. What would happen if it failed?

Spreader beam do take load. Such beams are used to lift higher tonnage loads. Beam is selected based on the lifting load. Ask your lifting engineer/mechanical engineer for details.

Spreader bars either move the lifting slings apart and as such are part of the lifting system, or hold the slings apart in which case they would be subject to compressive loading. Either way they would be subject to some loading. There is no way that they would be subject to no loading...
