Has anyone on the forum experience of working with and/or assessing the hand finishing/working of granite worktops, in particular the use of the large polishing stones with hand held grinders or "spinners" as they are often referred to.

These are operated without any guarding as the stones are larger than the traditional grinding disc guard and the operators argue that they need to be able to see the stone on the granite, apparently this is normal in this type of industry/operation.

I have contacted the supplier for their advice and also the local authority but without much success, any advice from the sharp end would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,
I know granite typically contains 30% respirable crystalline silica so there is a COSHH issue that needs to be addressed see http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/guidance/st0.pdf but I don't think that answers your query, maybe if the post goes back to the top some bright spark will provide the answer.
Cheers
Steve

Larry

Are your concerns about the guarding or the inhalation risk (or both)?
