Looks to me like ordinary plantation clearance; I blame political health and safety correctness for everything, in my day trains ran on time and politicians were polite while they were arresting you. Bring back hanging,

Now come on chaps, this may have been entirely the right thing to do - perhaps the participants complained that they couldn't see the wood for the trees!

In fact it was United Utilites who carried out the survey of the trees and cut them down not the council - but it doesn't make such a good story!
