Hi have recently got my NEBOSH General Certificate and have just sat my Construction exam. Am finding it a bit hard in getting a foothold in health and safety due to lack of experience.Has anyone got some helpful advice on what steps to take so i can get the experience to bolster my cv.Have taken out relevant insurances and have applied to various charities offering my services but have not heard back as yet. So if anyone out there can help would be most grateful Thanks Chris

Hi Chris. I know how you feel, as I am in the same position. It does not help that Cert holders are trying to compete with CMIOSH holders. So it it is not surprising who employers will go for. I am trying to find funding to do the Diploma distance learning, as I feel it is the best chance I have of getting a foot on the ladder. Best of luck for your searches Mike

Sorry to hear about you plight mate, i am quite lucky in that department, i have been in Demolition for over 29 years, gradually worked my way up the ranks, passed my Nebosh Construction Certificate in 2009, now i am the Safety Advisor for the company, if i were in your shoes, i would contact a local safety consultancy and ask if you could spend a bit of free time with them, learn the ropes as to speak, if you show willing and show them that you can do the job, hey you never know, they may offer you a job. The problem is, without specific experience you will really find it difficult, i specialise in demolition and construction, im not so sure that i would get a placement with say, the MOD, airlines, chemical instillations etc. See if you specialise in a particular field, then you can identify the Hazards and Risks, bit difficult if you dont specialise, as all trades have different requirements for knowledge.

Hi Mike52, don’t messily agree with you comments regarding competing with CMIOSH candidates. Many employers are aware of the criteria they are looking for in a health and safety role and in many cases they will choose an associate level grade for a variety of reasons over a CMIOSH candidate - don’t give up hope and stop being negative.

Freelance Safety I did not mean to sound negative, just aware that getting the experience is harder for NGC holders. I still keep applying for jobs any way. As I look at it if you do not apply you will not get the job so I have nothing to lose by applying. Only time and perserverance will tell, and I am sure I will get there eventually. Mike

Chris, experience is everything. Dont lisen to this issue of CMIOSH, in reality it means nothing! If you are good at what you do and have a specialist area, then you will find work, over and above CMIOSH.

Chris, if you have H&S as a career aspiration then CMIOSH must be a goal. That said, it will take at least three years assuming one year to pass a diploma and two years of IPD after that. In the meantime you need to be building up your experience side of things as you will already appreciate. On another thread I saw people talk about bartering; trade a risk assessment for a kilo of best mince at the butchers and so on. Good Luck!
