We are currently looking at various means of measuring potential for lead content in old paint which has to be removed for preparation of metal pipes etc. I am looking for some feedback on customary methods of sampling and any feedback on some of the non destructive means of testing such as the NITON XLp 300 particularly of their simplicity of use and accuracy.

Methods do exist using atomic absorption spectrophotometry which will give you a parts per million count. This method is commonly applied (e.g.) in testing paints used in toys for heavy metal content.
