Can anyone advise what awards I (for my company) could apply for?
I have been looking at the OHSAS 18001... I look after a company (charity) with around 700 staff spread over several sites.
Looking for something that would be cost effective but worthwhile
Anyone been here before?

Hi Danny,
The OHSAS one is a good one (my particular favourite), but RoSPA also do a similar scheme.
Off the top of my head those are the only two.....

Hi Danny
the British Safety Council also 'do' an International Safety Award'. Have a look at their website for the extensive list of winners, nearly all of which are UK based.
http://www.britsafe.org/events/isa.aspx for more info.
cheers

i guess as a charity what benefit do you feel that you would get for having such an award. not sure of costs but would the money be better spent elsewhere. Would it bring in any more revenue for the company or attract any new business or imparove the service to your current customers?

You cannot compare BS OHSAS 18001 certification by a UKAS accredited certification body with the BSC International Safety Award and the entire range of ROSPA Acheivement /Sector Awards!
Both the BSC International Safety Award and the ROSPA Acheivement /Sector Awards given on the basis of a paper based evidence supplied, although some of that evidence may include third party certification of the applicants health and safety management system.
Both ROSPA and BSC offer thier propretary audit certifcation, but in both cases, the certification is not accredited by UKAS.
What do you intend to gain by the award.
The various reasons for award applications are
#demonstrating to self and clients that a standard of health and safety management is being maintained.
#a non-verifiable means of benchmarking health and safety performance against other organisations
# the kudos, prestige, motivation and celebration the award means for applicants organisation, depending upon the specific natrure of the award.

You could go for the British Safety Councils 5 star which is a 3 day audit of your systems but it is expensive and apparently if you get 3 stars it's the eqivilent to OHSAS 18001

I very much doubt that BSC can substiantiate by independent verification/research its claim that its 3 Stars are equivalent to the OHSAS 18001.
For more information on comparision of various Health and Safety Management systems, refer to the HSE website information at:-

I think you need consider whether you are looking for something that recognises what you have already been doing or certification that is ongoing to demonstrate continual improvement.
Common choices as some members have already highlighted are
BS OHSAS 18001 - looks at your H&S management system not so much at the practical application
BSC Five Star Audit - number of days depends on the number of people, industry, size of site but minimum of two days. This differs from the 18001 in that it goes into a lot of detail on operational control and practical application, it would reasonable (in my opinion) that a comprehensive 18001 system run by a company would equate to 2-3 stars within the Five Star Audit. This isn't a slight on 18001 it's just there are some areas that the Five Star goes into that aren't specifically covered in 18001 to the same level of detail
If you are looking to recognise achievement maybe it is more along the lines of International Safety Award; ROSPA or have you considered entering the SHP Awards that have just opened?
Best Wishes - Donna
