I have a few inspections to do over the coming months in Scotland, shopfitting sites, both strip out and fit out.

Are there any differences in the Regs/requirements that I should look out for?

Hi Chris,
I would suggest having a quick look at this website, the fire legislation requirements are basically the same, most visits I have had from the local Fire & Rescue Service(Scotland) ask for an up to date FRA, Fire Policy that identifies the 'duty holder',arangements for ensuring fire safety measures are in place and maintained, training records, inspection/test records of gas systems/elect installation etc.

That's all well and good Les, but if Chris' work is construction / refurb work then he'll have limited responsibility with a FRA. It would be up to the duty holder or client to update the FRA dependent upon the information Chris supplies to him/her.

Apart from the lack of a requirement to produce site waste management plans, there aren't any other differences in construction legislation that I'm aware of Chris.

Everything is helpful - thanks.

My position is that of H&S inspector as far as the visits are concerned, I will be looking to see a fire risk assessment has been written and is up to date.

The SWMP would not apply anyway as the money is too low.

(Alex) Let's not understate the key importance of maintaining fire safety arrangements in strip out/refurb of an existing premises. Where the premises have been given over to the Principal Contractor he will have very specific and often quite dynamic issues to deal with in maintaining the safety of the workforce and the integrity of the property with respect to fire risks.
I often find that insufficient attention is paid to maintaining adequate fire safety measures, with scant detail in the Construction Phase Plan, for this type of Project - particularly where fire detection and alarm circuitry replacement or modification is part of the Project.
The recent £10M damage to the Cutty Sark during the restoration Project is a case in point?

The HSE advocate leaving existing fire alarm systems in place until the replacement system is installed, or at least as long as possible.

In my experience have a guess at what is usually the first thing ripped out?

All answers to my home address on a sealed five pound note :-)
