Would this be a viable way to complete DSE assessments:-
1. Issue a “self assessment form” to all persons working with VDU’s to complete at thier own work staions. 2. If they are returned to the safety officer with concerns he/she should then should carry out a more detailed assessment?
From a legal note – If the employee is currently happy with the setup (signs self assessment form) of their workstation, is there a further need to assess the risk?

Jon, Yes you are correct in that the employee should complete a self assessment at their own work station, and if anything is highlighted from that assessment then a proper DSE should be carried out, in some cases this may need an Occupational Health Professional carrying out the assessment. In any case DSE assessments should be reviewed annually, unless the employee requests one in the event of a change of their circumstances. A full DSE breakdown is available from the HSE website. Good Luck Sean

Jon, Forgot to say we have our own trained DSE assessors, they all completed their training through IOSH, however if the employee has a pre-existing condition i.e a back problem, then we call in our occupational health providers, who come to the work place and assess what equipment the employee needs to complete their duties safely.

Sorry, and dont forget their DSE breaks away from the computer, at least 5-10 minutes every hour, depending on the computer work. Sean

This is the approach we've used for groups of our employees. Normally around 10-20% need some form of follow-up, with only 1-5% of the total needing any detailed assessment and support. It's also a good way of reinforcing the guidance.

have a professional / formal checking system in place as well; as self assessment can come back and bite you at a later date

1. Give some Information, Instruction or Training to the DSE users ( a must before any self assessment) 2. Let them do the self assessments 3. Identify significant issues from these assessments. Assses these areas yourself to confirm or not 4. Develop an action plan to address the key issues. Mainly the DSE operators should be able to address most of these actions themselves

Hi, If you work for a large organisation it might be worth investigating an online DSE system, such as that provided by Cardinus, which will provide basic awareness e-training, self-assessment and monitoring/control by management. Regards Steve

We follow up on-line workstation training with a self assessment form with a similar amount of staff follow up to Bob Howdens staff, seems to have worked ok for us over the years.

We use Cardinus, it is reliable, you can access training and assessment history, get people to complete user actions to correct chair heights, desk layout etc. It also stores all e-mails sent to users.
We currently have over 600 UK based users on the system, and a training / Assessment completion rate of over 94%. We are soon rolling it out globally so wil treble the number of users, the great thing is they will get training that is compliant with thir own local regulations.
Yes there is a cost but it is cheaper than me flying to the US, CHina etc and staying in hotels while training people..... We are also looking to their Manual Handling training as well.
