I have a query in relation to the size of signage to be used at roadworks on 50 or 60MPH roads.

I have looked at table A1.1 of Appendix 1 of Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual Part 1:Design. The version I have is 2006, & it states in this table that the minimum size of regulatory signs on single carriageway road 50MPH or more is 900mm.

However, when I look at the Safety at street works and road works code of practice (effective February 2002 in N.I.) it states that 750mm signs are ok on single carriageway roads 50MPH or more.

Has anyone come upon this before, is there an explanation, or am i interpreting the information wrongly?

It was announced at our branch meeting last night that the traffic management Red Book review was in the consultation stage so you might want to look to the HSE to see if this is part of that review

Chapter 8 is a guidance document, based upon TSRGD 2002 and established industry best pratice. The Safety at Streetworks and Road Works is an ACOP specifically aimed at Utilities and their contractors under the provisions of the New Roads and Streetworks Act, however for single carraigeways and low speed dual's its advised that all follow this ACOP, unless there is something better.

There are several areas between both documents which do not provide the compatible information.

Typically then, a 'minimum' 750mm sign is standard on all single carraigeway roads above 40mph.

Thanks for the replies, the link to the new draft code of practice is most appreciated.

Cheers.
