Hi,
I have been successful in getting an interview with a local council as a H&S Officer. I have been asked to produce a ten minute presentation on slips, trips and falls in day care centres. I have researched on the internet and gathered a lot of information, also using the shattered lives website.
My dillema is that I am not 100% sure about the sort of activities undertaken in day care centres, mistakenly thinking it was residential care centres. If anyone can shed a little light on this and perhaps be willing to share some current presentations I would be most grateful.

Many thanks in advance
Glen

Hi Glen
Congrats on getting the interview in the first place. Day centres vary with respect to the clients that attend them - some may be for older people, others for disabled and others for people with special needs not specfically creating a formal disability. I suggest that you contact another local authority and ask them what they have. Don't contact the authority you will be having the interview with as it can be seen as canvassing and they may refuse to let you continue with the selection process. In most day centes people are brought in via some means of transport - may be provided by LA or may even be their own/taxi. So I suggest you think of a person's path from arriving at the premises , entering the premises, walking around and leaving. In between consider some of the activities that they may be involved in - some provide exercise routines which may include dancing. What floor covering is there as carpets for instance are very good re slip resistance but with people who shuffle because of infirmity they create a high risk of falling. As your presentation is just 10 minutes you will have to generalise to a certain extent but I would consider the above to give you enough. I would mention where incidents are likely to take place and why and then give a possible control to prevent. Remember people's footwear may be a problem in some day centres so take this into account.
Best of luck

Don't forget the staff. Many day centres also have a kitchen and serve hot meals, some quite large.
I always try to think why an employer might have chosen a particular subject. Is it just to test your knowledge or is it to tease out how you approach common hazards?
Size of the problem generally. Some cost effective stuff that can help to keep them to a minimum. Outline some proven successful programmes to maintain highest standards of housekeeping would be my bet.

Good luck
