Professional Indemnity Insurance by Job / Contract??
Rank: Super forum user
|
I am thinking of starting a very small H+S consultancy for SME's in my line of work - nothing too big as I have a full time H + S Role.
"Normal" indemnity insurance seems quite a reasonable cost per year but the Co. I approached do not cover anything to do with Asbestos (Advice / Management I assume are excluded). I understand to get cover could cost several thousand ££ per year which would be pointless for me as I am only looking to do a couple of jobs a month.
Do any insurance Companies offer cover for individual jobs / contracts regarding Asbestos? E.g. If I were to give advice on Managing Asbestos or if I undertook a Survey at one Site would it be possible to get cover for that particular one-off job?
Many thanks.
PS - How do I insert paragraphs in my post?!! Duh!

Out of interest how would you intend to comply with HSG264 if you only did a few surveys a year? What about ABICS and compliance with ISO17020 - and check surveys and competence ..... ?
cheers

Good point Bruce and thank you for your reply - that is something I had not yet thought about.
I'll just stick to H&S!

SW better make that a treble!
Just a thought, I may be wrong but you would probably need to factor in PI cover for a reasonable period of time 'beyond' your consultancy exists (in case you decide to follow a different stream).
Something a colleague of mine has to consider now he is entering retirement!
Good luck and all the best.

Thank you SP900308 - I was aware of this but could you give an idea of how many years after please? 3 years, 5 years or more?
At the moment I am only toying with the idea of providing H&S (Definitely no Asbestos!) consultancy services to the smaller companies I deal with during my normal working day - I do appreciate both the replies posted.

I currently have PI Insurance and have the exclusion regarding Asbestos, if I do get any equiries through I refer it to an associate who does Asbestos.
Regarding cover beyound, my understanding is if you undertake a contact in 2010, but issues arise say five years later in 2015 it is your insurance company in 2010 that would issue cover / cover the claim because that is when you undertook the contact and they had the contact for your insurance. That is why it is so important to keep records on who your insurer was in hte past. (Clear as mud ;-))
Cost is around £600 per year for PI.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Rob35 - I have been given quotes from about £450 - £650. Still looking at the small print.
Harrison - There is a good document entitled Consultancy - Good Practice Guide in the Info section. Very good info.
Some very good info if you do a search too - it's making me think twice now though

There are two different types of PI insurance policy which provide cover for different time periods:
- a "claims made" policy covers your legal liability for any claim made by a third party against you during the period of the policy cover ceases when the policy expires
- a "claims occurring" policy covers your legal liability for incidents which occurred during the period of the policy irrrespective of when the claim is actually made against you
Sorry if this confuses the issue slightly but you need to be aware of the type of cover you have so you know the level of protection you have. There can be gaps in cover periods if you change from one type of cover to another so always best to ask what claims basis is for your policy.

SW, the way your post reads are you intending to give H & S consultancy services to companies that you will be then reviewing or assessing for H & S purposes in your day job? That could bring about a legal minefield!!! If not, carry on that man!

Thank you ijmartin - appreciate all the assistance given.
Safetyelf - It may read that way but it's not meant to - I wouldn't put myself in a conflict of interests situation or take business away from my Employer.
I under take H S Q E duties and work in the manufacturing industry and our end product goes to Customers' who then fabricate the product further for the end user. When calling at their Sites for Quality inspections I sometimes find the H+S is quite frightening and I always give pointers on poor practices. So I was thinking, that, as I know their businesses well and a lot do not have / have inadequate systems in place, I thought of perhaps offering my services to a few of them. At a cost this time!

Interesting, just checked mine and mine states 'claims made'..........I will be onto my broker!! Rob35
