I am wondering if the Nebosh general cert carries any weight when searching for health and safety positions?. I recently passed with credit and i am currently studying the Nebosh fire cert. I have 27 yrs experience split between construction and catering. Since i passed the general cert i have been trying to gain a position on the health and safety ladder but have had no luck. I live in the Wigan area and would like views on this subject. I am thinking of studying the Nebosh Diploma in October but i am also wondering if this will be money well spent and if this is the course of action to gain employment?.

LATCHY,

The NEBOSH General Cert has served me well and I'm sure that will be echoed by the masses in our profession.

It can be the gateway for roles such as Officer, Advisor, Consultant and even Manager (when supported with other necessary attributes and a bit of luck).

I'm currently a Senior Consultant and Registered CDM-C, this all began with the NEBOSH General Cert (no credit) and a 10 year journey. Therefore - don't give up!

Hope this helps.

Simon

That'll be the masses in our profession that don't appear to use this forum anymore!

LATCHY, with the economy as it is I think that there has been a distinct lack of jobs in recent times.
I got my first H&S position with a Nat Cert and engineering background, so there are those of us who do find work without a higher qualification. That said I have subsequently gone on to do a degree. Grad IOSH and then CMIOSH seem to be what employers are looking for - there are other ways of getting Grad than just the Diploma - have a look on the IOSH website for accredited courses/providers near you ( I did my degree in Wrexham). PM me if you want the details etc. Good luck with whatever route you take.

LATCHY,

I have to agree somewhat with the statment by stuie regarding the economy.

I have had Cert since 1998, this has not prevented me being successfully employed in HSE positions, even to the level of a Divisional HSE Manager.
My career path has currently stalled due to the recession compared to 2 years ago; when I was last in the job market the phone never stopped ringing from agencies and several interviews as a result.

Keep your chin up and don't doubt yourself, times are hard for everyone at the moment but it will pick up and you will get the foot on the ladder.

It might be worthwhile asking through the forum for someone to look at your CV for you, I have seen on many occasions on this forum where our colleagues have offered this service to help others in your position.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Solo.
