I am currently looking into a manual handling issue at work, where a significant number of rubbish bins are required to be transported from a variety of loactions (Student Halls of Residences) to a central location point, to allow the council to collect. This task is generally carried out by one person, several times a week and involves pushing, pulling variable loads up/down inclines, over steps etc. I am considering purchasing a small works vehicle which can help but clearly will not answer all the questions. Has anybody out there come across anything similar and been able to sort? Thanks

Chain those bins to that central location point, and unlock it on collection days only. Get the students to take their own rubbish to the central collection. Careful consideration here can eliminate a significant MH risk, drastically reduce fire risks and give all those students a few "life" lessons!!!!

Hi Ron The HSE website has some fairly detailed stuff with regard to the manual handling of wheelie bins (kerbside collection) which might throw up some useful thoughts - e.g. http://www.hse.gov.uk/re...hsl_pdf/2006/hsl0625.pdf Whilst not answering your question directly, it might flag up some issues worthy of consideration when comparing alternative systems Best wishes Alistair

You can buy battery powered hand operated trucks (want for a better word) but basically connect them onto the bins then operated by battery power will tow along the bins while you operate whilst walking along by the side. Similar to what some supermarkets have done for moving trolleys around). Or alternatively don't leave it to one bloke to move all the bins there must be more than one person who can do the task or someone responsible for each area either the cleaning or maintenance.

I think ron has the right idea, a small trip by each student would surely eliminate a large task for the individual mentioned. With regular garbage collections by the council an individual home owner is expected to make their bins available (put their own bins out) so therefore the students, if they want their bin emptied take some ownership. You've almost entirely eliminated the MH risk on your part for your individual, sounds like a great solution.
