Has anyone experienced requests from employees who operate mobile plant with closed cabs? now we are experiencing Warm/Hot weather. We have numerous types of plant such as Volvo's, JCB's and Fork lift trucks. Not all have AirCon. However, I have suggested that we fit 12/24v cooler drinks boxes that will hold approx 4 cans of orange etc. and 12/24v cooling fans. To fit AirCon in the vehicles we have would ammount to approx £20,000. I know it would be a perfect solution, but at the moment I am trying to come up with an alternative cheaper option which this would be.

Ian, rest/respite breaks together with fans & drinks seems a reasonable solution to what is an occasional occupational problem in UK summers. Plant drivers are in a similar position to car/van/truck drivers without AC. Very uncomfortable, tiring and eventually smelly.

There is another current thread on wickable fabric clothing which may also be of interest to you.

Agree with advice offered by Stuff4blokes; rare eneough to see fine weather, but usually causes moans and groans when it appears.

HSE has some useful guidance:

On the note of technical garements (and this applies on the other thread as well) fast wicking fabrics do not keep you cool, they keep you dry so that when you stop exerting yourself you don't get hypothermia (or lesser conditions).

Your sweat is intended to keep you cool, wicking it away and evaporating it will just make you hotter and thirstier.

putting cool boxes which are 12v or 24 volt operated would only had to the heat in the cab due to the refrigeration process as well as cooling the contents they also produce heat. don't these cabs have windows that can be opened or possible look at tinting the windows (but not enough to cause issue come the winter when it gets darker) or is there a reflective film that can be fitted to reflect the heat back out (a bit like K glass)
